Subject: Kubuntu 8.04.2 - A necessery step backward.
Security: Public
http://www.kubuntu.org/node/69
The fact, briefly: Kubuntu, the KDE version of ubuntu, releases an updated version of 8.04, which still features KDE 3.5, since 8.10 sports KDE 4.2, which is not suitable, at least not on a production machine, to many KDE users.

Well, it had to happen. Let's face it, KDE 4.2 is great, and full of powerful features. So what's wrong with that? That nobody wants to learn from the start how to use and configure their system. And we're living an age where new interface features must be completely intuitive, or must be not.
I hope this doesn't begin a fork, but more a series of adjustments on the KDE 4.x series. In the hope that in six months or so we have a KDE 4.x that people actually wants to use.

Subject: Ubuntu 8.10: use UMTS mobile phone as a bluetooth modem (on Kohjinsha SH8)

Well, no luck with the VGA out yet. Which is quite frustrating, considering that it worked out of the box on ubuntu 7.10 (and even 8.04, I tested a live cd). But I needed the mobile internet access anyway, so here we go: Read more... )

Here we go.
I plugged my new samsung external DVDr, put the live cd in, and selected 'install ubuntu'.
I went on with normal installation procedure, and only after a while I realized that I was pushing buttons onscreen. Yes, now touchscreen works out of the box, albeit slightly uncalibrated.
As soon as I was able to boot the installed system, I had the second surprise. RT73 driver now works out of the box too, no need to use ndiswrapper anymore. Which means, WiFi working right from the start. Webcam also worked out of the box. In other words, I felt happy and useless at the same time, a feeling that only a true geek in front of a working system knows.
I spent some time installing all the software I need and making adjustments, and quickly discovered that you cannot calibrate the touchscreen with the calibration utility in the repositories, which is not compatible with the penmount integrated in the kohji.
You only need to install the proper driver from the penmount website, and it is even easier than it used to be, no need to put your hands on xorg.conf.
Go here and download the driver for penmount 6000 USB (that is what you have inside the kohji) for ubuntu 8.10. Uncompress the archive, and from a terminal go inside the uncompressed directory and run the installer as root
cd pmlinux-ubuntu8.10
sudo sh install.sh
Since the installer changes permissions for everything in the folder, I chmodded 777 the readme to be able to read it anytime later.
chmod 777 README-ubuntu810
Now restart xorg (by pressing ctrl+alt+backspace), and disable compiz-fusion before you run the calibration utility. In the menu System > Preferences > Appearance choose the Visual Effects tab and set to 'Noone'.
Now System > Preferences > Penmount Calibration. Don't worry, it's already done to run as root.
Hit the red dots with the stylus. You're done.
Enable Visual Effects again, do whatever you want.
I only need to setup again the internet connection with my 3G phone as a bluetooth modem, which worked fine in 7.10...
Update:
I wanted to setup the 3g connection, and to be more confortable I plugged the kohji to an external monitor, mouse and keyboard. Well, the VGA output which always worked at least in 'clone' mode, isn't working anymore. I am now trying to fix this, check tomorrow for updates!

Subject: iPhone nano in 2 days?
Security: Public
Two days to the MacWorld expo in San Francisco. Like every Mac-user (I am not an Apple fan, at least, no more) out there I am trying to guess the announcements.
This time we have an easy prediction: obviously they have to update the Mac Mini and iMac to bring them in line with the new Macbook/Macbook pro line. Which means Nvidia chipsets and graphics.
The second guess, however is more uncertain: as usual there has been a leak of informations from case and covers manufacturers that brings us to a circulating evidence of an iPhone nano being planned and not far from release.
However, it sounds quite strange that such an announcement could be done without Steve's own keynote and 'one more thing' routine. Well, I guess if the iPhone nano is presented without Steve, this will raise concerns about his health.
If this is the case, I'd prefer to see an unexciting presentation of a slightly updated iMac and Mac mini: currently Steve's health do not affect Steve family's and friends alone, but also shareholders and their money...

I recently bought this album on iTunes.

I am not writing any critic or comment here, you can find as many as you want googling for it.
Just wanted to let you know that it could be easily retitled 'Maladjusted part II', so the Morrissey fans out there will surely like it.
Scott's voice is ... well, again google for that.

Subject: Un caso 'sui generis'
Security: Public

I know somebody out there is waiting for the guide to install Ubuntu 8.10 on the Khojinsha.
Sorry, you'll have to wait a week or two: I don't currently have the time to do such a dangerous operation on a machine I heavily use for work, plus I'm waiting for a new HD for my desktop PC (the asus Pundit) where I will have the space to backup everything and make sure I don't make damages to my precious data.
What the Furukawa!? dont' I have all the Data, including the MAIL folders and other significant directories contained in the HOME moved to a separate partition from the OS???
Yes, of course I do. But since the Kohji now contains several months of work, I am definetly not doing anything risky with it.
However this time I will also write a guide on how to use a 3G (UMTS) or 3.5G (HSDPA) generic phone as a modem via bluetooth. That has been a pleasant experience for me during the summer. But I didn't take a single note of how I did that, and now I can only remember creating a device in /dev and writing the bluetooth ID of the phone somewhere... So I will have to start from the beginning. I heard that 8.10 brings built in support for 3G. After I saw the built in support for tablets/touchscreens in 8.04 I can only be afraid of that.
